“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up”

As a little child, I would paint and draw at every opportunity I got but as I got older I did less and eventually stopped(doesn’t mean I still don’t have it in me,lol) but I still love art. So when I found out about the Nike Art Gallery I knew I had to put it on my to-do list whenever I had the opportunity to visit Lagos.

Nike Art Gallery is owned by Nike Davies-Okundaye; she is a 67 year old Nigerian woman who is a professional textile artist and a painter. The Nike Art Gallery is the largest art gallery in West Africa. and it houses over 7,000 artworks. It is a magnificent four-storey tall building which houses over 7,000 artworks with diverse collection of arts by multitude of Nigerian artist(with the owner inclusive) which offers an insight into all cultures of Nigeria through the medium of art.

Nike Art Gallery is located at 2, Elegushi Beach Road, Lekki, Lagos. The Nike Art Gallery is also located in Kogi State, Osun State and the city of Abuja.

When I eventually “made” it to Lagos, myself and Tosin who blogs here decided to explore. Upon arrival at the Nike Art Gallery I was welcomed by a group of beautiful ladies who were gorgeously dressed in an adire top and I was asked not to take pictures inside the gallery(*inserts crying emoji here*). I also looked forward to meeting the owner but I was told she was ill and couldn’t make it down to the gallery. My friend and I were captivated by every single art work on each floor and my God! It was a sight to behold. Once we we’re done with feeding our eyes, we retreated outside to enjoy art even much more in an open space.

As soon as we were done, the owner of the Nike Art Gallery walked in but at that time we had run out of time and we wanted to let her rest and we both agreed to visit as many times as possible.

Entry to the Nike Art Gallery is absolutely free but the art works aren’t free. Some of the art works cost millions of naira but of course there are way cheaper artworks to buy at the gallery.

Are you an art lover? Have you ever been to Nike Art Gallery? Will you visit when you have the opportunity?
